Wow, backlog. I can't believe I missed this thread.

I'm glad the idea of the debating society has come back to light. I remember Lil putting the idea forward initially when we were putting the bid together, and have seen just a small fraction of the work she's done to make it a viable proposition.

If we take her idea, run with her rules, then I think that it'll work. But as has been pointed out in this thread, if someone just tries to start something up without the planning that's needed, and that Lil has already done, it'll just end up yet another thread for trolls.

Do we really have a problem with "trolls" though? We have people that can be, er, passionate and people who can go on forever putting pins on the heads of angels. We have those that like to make wisecracks and we have genuinely stupid people, but I don't really see any evidence of childish trolling. Maybe I have a mote in my eye or perhaps I'm looking in the wrong places.
