I have decided to do a PhD in geriatrics, rather than trying to dual qualify in ITU. PhDs are probably more use than trying to be a Jack of all trades.

That sounds like a very sensible decision. There are a lot of medics in the world, and it makes sense that a number know a lot about something, than a little about everything.

PhDs are only more use in a situation where you need a PhD. Just as ITU specialisation is only useful if you're going into a job where you'll be doing more of that work.
I'm sure you've made the right decision for you, enjoy it, learn something and with a bit of luck you'll do a bit of research that is good for everyone.
