Waiting for the other shoe to drop...
Mr. Baby Man Started conversation Oct 6, 2001
I know I'm far from alone in this, but I have been wracked with anxiety over the state of our great nation during the past few weeks. This journal entry is a way for me to vent a few of those anxieties, and get them off my chest. Let me say for the record that unlike our extremist foes, I embrace my life as it it is lived here on earth. I am not willing to forfeit the privileges of life in lieu of the unknown rewards beyond. Those will come in time. I am also not completely naive to the plight of our foes, however. I understand that when you live in a society where the quality of life is subhuman, you have nothing to lose in attacking those who seemingly flaunt excess before you. I believe in time our enemies will discover that change occurs in moderation with compromise, and not by force and terror.
My immediate concerns stem from the impending direct threat to my life. A couple of weeks ago the FBI issued a warning about a very credible threat they received, targeting "a Hollywood studio". Not only do I work at one of those Hollywood studios, but I happen to work at the one studio which has achieved the most success in promoting capitalism and the American way on a global scale. I'll bet you can already guess which one.
Everyday, from my office window, I hear planes and helicopters buzzing overhead. I see deliveries coming in and out of the studio. Currently, a man I've never seen is unloading large non-descript bundles, wrapped in garbage bags, from the back of his pickup truck to the loading dock. Paranoid, I know, but I'm beginning to believe we may have seen the dawn of a new era where paranoid is no longer crazy. Where paranoid can make the difference between alive and dead.
I try to allay my fears by focusing on the increased security at the gates, or the constant police patrols through the backlot, but additional security won't stop a plane or a virus. I try to contain my concern with the simple fact that the situation is absolutely and completely out of my control, but that just makes it frustratingly worse. So the only thing I can really do now is vent it out. And hope someone's there to listen.
