You are not infact a 'Geek of all trades' as you claim, you don't mention Warhammer at all (or not that I saw,) and we who do this wonderful wargame (well in fact I do Warhammer 40,000)are usually classed as geeks...

Truth be told, I have been considering getting into that game for a while. The one I'd prefer is WH, but everyone that I know that has anything to do with games workshop play 40k. I would, but for one, they cost so freakin' much, and two, the race I'd be most interested in is the Necrons, and they have so very few units, and a grand whopping total of 0 heavy support. (uh, if the Destroyer isn't heavy support). So does knowing more than the average joe about WH count?

Oh, just a side note, when I said "they cost so freakin' much", I was referring to both WH and WH40k. Just thought I'd clarify that.

I understand, I must of spent well over £1500 on the superb game...
And the fact you were thinking of starting does kind of class you as a geek(no offence)...
If you do start 40K PLEEEEEAASE DO NOT DO Space Marines, everyone does them. Necrons perhaps aren't the best idea...

A friend of mine suggested the same thing, as far as the space marines go. Actually, I'm also considering imperial guard. What about you? What army(s) to you go for?

I currently have just finished a Chaos Marine army, and beginning a Tyranid army, as you can tell I like evil armies.
Though all truth be told I did start with Space Marines... OH THE SHAME!

Is there a way for someone without much time and money to get into this hobby. I was thinking of trying something different to the run of the mill 40K which everyone I know seens to play.

Honestly, I doubt it. What I do when my friend comes over is use the simple rules for movement, combat, etc., that I invented and apply them to a bunch of figures, lego men, whatever. In my case, I use this sweet chess set we have. A friend of mine has a bunch of midieval lego men and weapons, and we often use those. Other than that . . .

a different game to 'run of the mill 40K' would be Inquisitor...
the game itself is a lot more involved, you only have about 4 models in a game (on each side) and the cost would be reduced.
the models are bigger than in 40K, it is a skirmish game set in the world of 40K. The Inquisition are the finest agents of the Emperor, them and their warbands will venture through the worlds and galaxies of the Imperium to find any aliens, heretics, and all kinds of other nasty things...
In these quests the inquisitors will encounter other inquisitors and a slight clash of views will occur, ending in a skirmish in the streets of hive cities/tunnels/sewers/where-ever.
I own the rule book, but don't yet have any models and haven't played a game... but it looks very interesting and i am VERY hyped...

I was considering that actually.

it's good, unless you want to heavily convert your own models it only costs about £15 a model. X4 would be about £60, + rulebook = £80.
(still not cheap, but cheaper than a 40K army...)
