I think I'm all set for Christmas dinner
I finished off the last of the food shopping tonight, although I did have to ask someone if the chicken I picked was enough for five people - what do I know, I'm a veggie! I was bloody annoyed though because I was going to make stuffing balls but you cannot get a packet of Paxo round our way for love nor money at the moment However, I've got everything else and as we all like soggy sprouts I don't have to worry if they get boiled to buggery

Ye gods, no packets of Paxo??? What is Great Britain coming to? Hee in my small French town i can toddle to the English shop 5 minutes away & get some. Disgraceful.
Are you actually going to do the cooking thing with the chicken? As a fellow veggie; i always offer the entire shooting match to Xmas guests, but minus the dead animal stuff; i make a Cheatloaf thing instead; nobody has ever complained (quite the opposite!)

Good news for 2legs.
Maybe bad news for turkeys. As for sprouts; i reckon Brussels has a crisis on its hands...

You don't need Paxo, get some fresh sage, breadcrumbs, chopped fried onion, an egg, and some salt & pepper, and mix them all together.

I cannot stand boiled to death sprouts. Instead we'll be having them coarsely chopped and stir-fried for a few mins with some bacon bits and sesame seeds

Can't bloody stand turkey.
Wild boar for us. We've got a very good butcher who has sorted us out a nice leg roast from a boar that he's splitting six ways. I'm going to coat it in fennel seeds and chilli and slow-roast it overnight with a splash of red wine vinegar. I'm going for some grape and garlic stuffing (odd, I know, but tasty), and the sprouts will be halved and sauteed with nutmeg. Roasties, parmesan parsnips, glazed carrots with cumin and the inevitable bacon and chipolata rolls.
I know it's late, but I still haven't decided on a starter. Good smoked salmon seems to be very thin on the ground this year.

You've just enough time to make your own gravadlax instead then.

A friend made an excellent fried turkey for a party last weekend. Skinned it first and injected it with Caribbean Jerk Wing Sauce (from a Buffalo wing restaurant). Very tasty, with a bit of a kick.

MAKE my stuffing mix? That'll be bloody right! Parents, inlaws and a Jennifer running about is bad enough without having to do anything more complicated than taking something out of a packet
The thing I like about cooking chicken is that they tell you on the packet how long too cook it for. If it all goes wrong I can always blame it on that

I think we've just about sorted out our Christmas day menu now.
Breckfast: Vodka smoothys.
(at some point someone puts some stuff in the oven)
Pub.
Midafternoon: start on teh wine and whisky and vodka.
pub.
(at some point someone remembers someone at some point put something in the oven, we rescue it and depending what it looks like/how drunk we are, eat it)

My main duty for the day, as ever will be to sit near the Christmas tree and catch anyone, especially my Father as they/he falls into it some things never change, and our family Xmas traditions are wonderfully predictable actaully I must get round to doing some Christmas shopping some time this week I guess... have I missed last post yet?

Did you remember to get the sprouts started in April?

I did - they've been boiling away continuously apart from when we moved house. They had a 12 hour rest while the cooker was being transported and hooked up again
Key: Complain about this post
