Have you seen the Edited entry on reiki, samodiva? A227945
When I was trained, it was explained to me as an earth energy that we could become attuned to. When the body is in need of healing, often through physical pain, a reiki attuned healer can put their hands on the body of the subject, who will then feel a sensation where the hands are placed. It could be a feeling of heat, or cold, or tingling. The reiki person will usually also get a feeling. I most often get heat, although I have also had cold. Sometimes, I have felt heat, while the other person feels cold, so there's no telling.
I have used reiki on myself and my eight year old comes to me if he's had a bump. I've also used it on someone who pulled a shoulder muscle at work and on a colleague who had a back problem. She felt intense heat, then a sensation down her leg and she said it eased the condition.
People who are attuned to Reiki II can direct healing at a distance. I can't do that yet.
Has that answered your question?

Oh, yes, in addition, I was told that being attuned was like tuning in a radio aerial so that the signal can be received and transmitted. Healing goes to where it is needed and then stops.

I was taught by a wonderful Australian teacher called Barbara Macgregor, who comes over to London a couple of times a year. I was introduced to her by my partner, who was also taught by her years ago. If you're interested I'll see if I can find her website.
I don't think you have to have any particular religious or spiritual beliefs to do reiki. Once you have the attunement it works and once you have it, it can't be taken away from you.
When Barbara is doing the training, which takes place over three days, she explains about her beliefs about the causes of illnesses, aches and pains. It fitted with what I already believed, although again, there is no compulsion or necessity to believe.

The course took three days. The attunements are not learned - they are given, but you do learn how to use the reiki - you learn about what causes illness, although not in the western medical way - the learning is more about the societal and spiritual causes. You also learn the hand positions for giving a reiki treatment.
Barbara's site is here: http://www.simplyreiki.co.uk/international.htm
This site is from one of the links on her pages. You may find it interesting: http://www.reikidharma.com/en/index.html
