Being a scout
Zarquon's Singing Fish! Posted Aug 18, 2002
Hi there kevo!
I see from your home space that you're technically competant and from both your number and your home space that you are new around here.
At any one time, there are only around 40 scouts in the whole site, so there is always a waiting list. It can take from several weeks to several months depending on turnover, so be prepared for a wait. also bear in mind the fact that the italics, who make the decisions do not usually work weekends.
What I did when I wanted to be a scout (I can tell you want to be one, it appears twice on your 'to do' list, although interestingly, not in first place) was to haunt Peer Review, seeing what entries came in, trying to be helpful and I got myself known for being 'in on almost every conversation about new entries'. It helps to write a couple of entries first, so that you know what to expect and it helps you to be a better scout.
Age is not a deterrent to be a scout, but lack of commitment is and experience can be, so get as much experience as you can. Go to PR. comment on entries. See what other scouts do. Get to know what makes a good entry and what the rules are for entries being accepted into the Edited Guide.
Even if you don't get to be a scout quickly (as I said, it generally takes time), you'll find you get to know people by being involved and people will get to know you too!
Enjoy h2g2 and see you around. Ask any of us if you need help. We'll always be pleased to assist.
