Sea Change Started conversation Dec 4, 2004
I spent most of today and yesterday speaking to various hotel employees across the lenght of Great Britain, after spending the day before talking to Dutch, Danish and Swedish ones.
My sense of what's an acceptable vowel or consonant in English is totally shot, and I find myself totally unable to understand simple phrases from my fellow Americans. I am also misspelling like mad, after never having had much difficulty.
Even more weirdly, I was able overhear and understand an entire conversation in Spanish between a Salvadoreno and a Guatamalan on the bus on the way home tonight. Usually my book learning doesn't do a whit of good when it comes up against real speakers.
I suppose this could also be me rationalizing brain damage from my heart pumping too hard for my cerebral sinuses, though.
