Thanks for that - I think I saw the article in the TLS and started to read it, realised how long it was and that I didn't have time, and then stopped and forgot about it.
There's something about Rawls' writing that I've always thought is underpinned by - or at least informed by an understanding of - religious faith of some kind.

I don't know much about Rawls, other than your article. He does seem to be trying to pin down fairness to a degree that's absent in most folk. One kinda folk under God then?
The only other time I'd heard him mentioned was in an economics class in market failure (ie things like defence or education where market solutions are shunned everhwhere); the (shite) lecturer always referred to Rawls' views as radical, but never got round to mentioning why they were radical. The fact that maybe society as a whole should be organised for the benefit of those in it is obviously outlandish!
