Welcome to h2g2 -if you would like to give yourself a name (numbers can be a little impersonal - and hard to remember smiley - laugh) you can do so by hitting the "preferences" button on your screen. If you are viewing in "goo" (dark blue background) the button is at the left hand side nestled in the goo - don't know where it is in alabaster (white background) cause I'm a goo fan - but I am sure that you will find it there somewhere smiley - biggrin

My name is Feisor and I am an ACE (Assistant Community Editor) here at h2g2.

We ACEs are here to assist new researchers so if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.
You can leave a message on my space just by clicking on my name at the top of this message or by hitting the reply button button below - it won't hit back (usually).

The "Italics" (they are the people who run this place - so-called because their names are displayed in bold italics - God Bless 'Em) have left a message for newcomers at
http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/Welcome-Newcomers
it's got a lot of the basic background and how-tos that you will need - a good place to start

If you want to explore try Sheas List of links

I am sure that you will love this community as much as we do smiley - biggrin There's lots of things to see, clubs to join and people to meet - please don't be shy - just jump right in - this is a friendly place. But be careful - it can become quite addictive - believe me I know smiley - laugh

Well Munch - I see that you found the preferences button smiley - laugh and "Munch" is a lot easier than Magnifico Giganticus smiley - biggrin

If I am not online when you need help (I'm in Australia - so the time difference thingy could come into play) any of the ACEs can assist you - or at least point you in the right direction. You can find a link to them on my page.

Settle back with a smiley - bubbly and enjoy this place - we love it!!!smiley - laugh

Hi- how do I either test or get checked my article's GuideML before submitting it to Peer Review? It's not quite as simple as opening HTML in a browser is it. smiley - sadface Hmm...

Thanks- "Munch"

Well... I hate to admit it but ... rather than giving you an answer that I am not sure of - I have asked a Scout to come and help you.
The Scouts are volunteers who are expert at Guide Entries and The Peer Review System.

Should be along soon ....

I'd like to help, Munch, but I'm not exactly sure what it is that you're trying to do. Is this an Entry that you've written off-site and now want to put into the Guide?

Anyway, whatever, when you've finished your Entry and you click on the button to store it, it won't store the Entry if there are any mistakes in GuideML. (That's assuming that you're working in GuideML, of course - and you should do so if you want to get the Entry accepted into the Edited Guide).

If there are any mistakes in GuideML, you'll get a screen with 'Edit Guide Entry' as a heading, then your Entry text with the GuideML tags showing. There'll be a message in red lettering next to the mistake, telling you where you've gone wrong.

Hope that helps! smiley - smiley

yeah, I've written it in a text editor, and I was going to copy it into the submit box. I'll go and check if it works, and see what happens. Thanks. smiley - smiley

Hmm well it seems to be working now. The problem is that if you press "preview" or any of those buttons, then terminate the transfer say because you realise you've made a mistake by pressing STOP, then the clever software prevents you from resubmitting without opening a new window. There should be a warning or a reset button on the submit page. smiley - sadface

Oh- one question though, where's the list of usable emotions and icons, I've lost it and I can't find it. smiley - grovelsmiley - cheerssmiley - laugh Thanks.

It's right here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/Smiley .

Yes, your Entry looks pretty good now! Just one small point: in the Edited Guide, always use single quote marks, unless you've got a quote inside a quote. Apparently double quote marks can sometimes make the GuideML go a bit wonky! smiley - bigeyes
