Okay, so I always try to write songs, but whan I write (or rather doodle) things on the piano, or guitar, they always get stuck. I don't claim to be the next Beethoven or anything, but it would be nice to finish a song once in a while! (some decent lyrics might help once in a while too!)
Now, I play three intruments, so this should be easy, you would think. Inspiration is all around us, and the more you put into songs the better they are, but now I'm in this rut Ican't get out no matter how hard I try. Dammit. Any suggestions??

I think, quite possibily, this whole "3 instruments" thing just warps your fragile little mind, and confusion occurs. I am familiar with confusion. It's generally a friendly little worm, but mistreat it and the consequences could be dire. Best leave it be. In the meantime, I think writing down inspiration is good. It's not like the stuff you write is pants, after all, and if it's the right moment, it'll be good, I promise.
So, shower radio?

You know what's annoying? I write stuff, I do. But in my head mostly, and if I had my notebook with me when I had my little bursts of inspiration I think I would be a whole lot closer to writing my novel. Darn.
So, the moral of this story is: put that Bagpuss notebook (and Clangers pen - you know you want to!) to good use, and have it on you all the time.

If songwriting is anything like creative writing (which it probably isn't, but hey) you should:
Think of a concept or idea for a theme and base the song around that
Look at poems or pieces of writing that inspire you and see what you think is so special about the piece and aim for that
Find a style that suits you and that you feel comfortable with, as well as one that you know works, ie in the style of another artist - for example, the divine comedy's neil hannon bases a lot of his work on lines from great literature, which can make it easier to write (try taking a starting line and going from there)
Anyone have any other thoughts? I hope this makes sense.
love Kat xx

I wrote a song when I was in the toilet this afternoon, does that count?

Was that your inspirational or thematic one then?
