Cloudesly (a man who does not know where his towel is anymore!) made a mistake.
Newfoundland joined confederation in 1949, not 1967. I know this because I am at a Canadian school and my history final is tommorrow.

... And a very good school it must be! Because you're right.

I once met a fellow who claimed to be last 'Newfie' to be shipped out of Canada as an illegal alien by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) - who incidentally aren't required to perform all their police duties on horseback - before Newfoundland entered confederation in 1949.

Yes, you are in fact correct. As I Newfoundlander, I am annoyed, yet rarely surprised, by the strange and incorrect information that other Canadians diseminate about us. I once dated a girl from Alberta who, until she arrived here, didn't know Newfoundland was an island...

Did she have strong suspicions about Prince Edward Island?smiley - winkeye

Canada is such a big place with relatively so few people in it... and... well, it often surprises me how uninterested people are about other areas. Torontonians often seem to be the folks living on an island.smiley - winkeye

Actually, having been to Toronto, I strongly suspect Torontonians think they are living on a planet by themselves. smiley - winkeye

The surprising part about Newfoundland is that more people don't have knowledge of the place. This is the oldest city in North America, and the first discovered and settled. But then, i suppose if more people knew about it, we'd be up to our collective bottoms in tourists.

While being the largest economic centre in the country may not deserve "planetary" status, I think it deserves something.

I've lived in Toronto the majority of my life, and I still knew Newfoundland was an island. smiley - smiley

I don't think Torontonians really deserve all the flak they get. I've taken the time to travel to most of the rest of Canada, and parts of the U.S. and Mexico: Except for the winter being so dreary, I still prefer Toronto.

If you're not a big city person, I can understand not liking Toronto. However, it's no real reason do dislike Torontonians. With the range of diversity present in T.O., and the enormous population of the GTA, it's pretty unrealistic to assume any stereotype of Torontonians could be at all accruate.

All in good fun Chris.smiley - winkeye I lived in Toronto myself for a bit. There's an awful lot that Torontonians (and all Canadians) should be proud of the megacity for: it's a big, clean, safe (relative to other big cities), place that's full of fun and great places to eat... just for a start. No offense meant.smiley - winkeye

I wasn't really offended (well maybe a bit), I just thought I'd offer insite (since I'm a native Torontonian and all). smiley - smiley

The only really bad thing about Toronto, that I can think of, well maybe it's the thing that bugs me the most, well the one the bugs me the most asside from people who drive too slow, and maybe people who honk at me when I don't feel like driving fast, and asside from the name "Megacity" when GTA would be fine, is the name of Toronto's basketball team: "The Raptors". smiley - sadface

This is truly embarassing, as it shows all to well how the masses can be so easilly influenced by media, to the point that the name of creature from a movie that happend to be big at the time is chosen in lieu of something actually significant to Toronto -- like maybe "The Towers".

Thought I'd throw in another perspective in the form of a link to another obscure posting: http://www.h2g2.com/A229808. My link to Vancouver, BC
This one isn't coded, as the code wasn't available when posted, so it looks a bit crude (and I can now see some spelling errors), but overall it gets the idea across...
