h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Well, I'm damned if I know anything about what I'm doing now. I mean, I thought that the minute I became a full time researcher for the new guide, things would be clearer - I would have a Purpose, a Plan, but no. I still have no idea what I'm doing around here, on this planet. Guess I'll just have to go shoot myself now. Goodbye, silly buggered world

By saying you don't know what's going on do you mean you would like some help? Or is it non h2g2 related? I don't know if I can help with the latter, but the first is what I'm here for. I'm an ACE, an assistant community editor, and we are the researchers who have volunteered to pop around helping new researchers. So if you've any specific questions, don't hesistate to ask... I hope I can be of some assistance.

Hmmm, no, I guess that was just meant to express my consternation with not actually knowing what I'm doing here. While I don't really know what I'm doing on the outside world either (gonna find out in a month or so), this specific problem is of much greater significance, since when I'm here my whole attention is focused on being here, while in the world outside I can just drift off. Guess I'd be glad to hear some beginners' tips without having to flip through dozens of pages here, but I can't actually pose a question here. Thanks, though.

As for beginner's tips... what I find most useful is the smiley page: http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/Smiley (we just got 40 new ones yesterday!) and the GuideML Clinic: http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/GuideML-Clinic . Also, the ACE homepage is a great place to find people who can help ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/Aces ), and the Gurus are here for all technical problems ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/Gurus ).

Also, the vast majority of people here are incredibly friendly and will talk to you at random-- especially if you activate your user space by hitting "edit page" on the right of your screen. Some great places to check out are http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/Askh2g2 and http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/Talk . Just a warning though-- don't use any urls that link off the bbc site in forums because they'll be deleted by the Moderators, and the same goes for foreign languages. We didn't use to have these rules, but since we moved to the Beeb, we have to confirm to their rules no matter how we think them. *shrug*
