How do I create Smileys and Italics on here when I am chatting to people from here?

only editors use italics. as for smileys they are lower case
enclosed in brackets such as . since we don't have a porpose smiley that didn't take now i try it with towel 
and voila a towel smiley.
there is a list of approved smileys and their code on the smiley page. click on the towel(or any real smiley) and it will take you there.

You can't use italics in conversations, as the forums only support plain text.
You can use italics within Guide Entries, by enabling GuideML and using the ...italics... tag.
