Whats a liberty spike? And secondly, I think you should retitle the entry-it seems to be more about punk culture as a whole than the actual punk music, punk "rawk".
Is that how they spell it in the uk?
Hmm.
Researcher 177704 Posted Jan 26, 2002
No, that is not how we spell it in the UK.
I have always thought being 'punk' wasn't about what music you listen to, or how you dress. It annoys me when kids go out today, and get the latest Blink-182 album, and immediately think they're 'punk'. Punk rock isn't just about the music, it's about the thought and philosphy behind it.
Punks play music not for money, or to be cool, but for love. Punk culture, or 'the scene' as we call it, is what makes punk rock. Trying to make a positive difference is more important than looking good.
A band with distorted guitars, fast drums etc. but who sing about half assed Nazi white trash aren't punk; a band who devote their whole lives to punk, trying as hard as they can to make a difference, are punk.
Hmm.
Researcher 177704 Posted Jan 26, 2002
haha. I wish it could be renamed punk 'rawk'. it sounds cool ass.
what is a liberty spike????????????

Twenty-First Century Schizoid Man Posted Jan 27, 2002
Perhaps we should ask the author. Ill do that.

All the dogma and finger-pointing ("he's a poser, she's a poser") that has pervaded into the punk scene continues to reconfirm my belief that punk rock, as both a musical and cultural movement, is dead.
Hmm.
Researcher 177704 Posted Aug 20, 2002
Woah! I'd completely forgotten about this thread. It's a classic example of one of threads that i posted to as a newbie, which is sort of interesting
As for your point, The Cheese, I suppose it depends on the scene. In relation to the miniscule scene which i am a half-assed member of, i'm afraid i'd have to agree with you
However, concerning my own personal scene, and the way that punk influences my actions, I'd have to say that it's very much alive and well, and doing its best to make a positive difference.
Hmm.
The Cheese Posted Aug 20, 2002
Exactly. The only way to be a punk rocker is to say f**k all those other punk rockers and do your own thing .
Or, you must be totally naive about the "scene" so as to not taint yourself with dogma.
Hmm.
Researcher 177704 Posted Aug 20, 2002
Agreed. Er, I mean, f**k you
I don't know why I felt the need to 'define' punk rock in posting two. Perhaps it was because of something !!2T4RF06K3R!! said in another forum

Here's a quote that kind of sums it all up (I think it might be from Kurt Cobain, who people see either as a big punk god or a whiny poseur , but I don't even know if it's his):
"The day you pick up your guitar and walk out of the house is the day you sell out."
Another one, from my friend Phil:
"Any band that calls itself punk rock is not punk."
Hmm.
Twenty-First Century Schizoid Man Posted Aug 21, 2002
Well, Nirvana was essentially punk band, so Kurt was prob a punk.
Hmm.
Luvian Posted Oct 30, 2002
Nirvana were NOT punk. They were grunge. And attention seekers at that. HOw can you put Nirvana in the same category as The Ramones, The Clash and The Sex Pistols?! They were the greats. And now these teeny boppers like Sum41 and even that Avril Lavigne chick are being called punks... why? cos they dress skate, and dont care... apparently.
Hmm.
Twenty-First Century Schizoid Man Posted Nov 3, 2002
I said ESSENTIALLY punk. Kurt, Chris, and Dave were punks, and their sound had punk as a base as opposed to say Soundgarden. SOundgarden was ESSENTIALLY a metal band, like Pearl Jam.
Hmm.
Twenty-First Century Schizoid Man Posted Nov 3, 2002
And sum41 and blink281 and the rest, well, theyre pop. straight out bubblegum.
Hmm.
The Cheese Posted Nov 3, 2002
I have to disagree with you here. Nirvana may have had a punk fanbase, but Weezer has a punk fanbase today - does that make them punk? Nirvana was grunge infused with pop.
Furthermore, Pearl Jam is _not_ metal. Pearl Jam is further from metal than Nirvana was. I understand labeling Soundgarden as metal, but I wonder if you've ever heard a Pearl Jam song.
Finally, I do agree that Sum41 and blink182 are pop. But give me pop with a touch of punk, no matter how phony, over f***ing Nickelback or Linkin Park any day of the week.
Hmm.
Twenty-First Century Schizoid Man Posted Nov 8, 2002
Sorry, I meant Alice in Chains, Not Pearl Jam. Now Alice in CHains, THEY were metal.
But anyway, weezer has a punk fanbase cuz they have a punk sort of minimalism, loud fast guitars aesthetic, but inject a whole lot of melody.
NIrvana built their sound off punk, not metal like the other Seattle bands. THats what i mean bu saying they were essentially punk. If anything, you have to agree that Nirvana were the punkiest of the grungers at least.
Hmm.
NotQuiteGothic Posted Dec 21, 2002
Nirvana was a grunge band. Pearl Jam was their rival. Alice in Chains was metal. I just have to say that I love old punk (the clash, the ramones, and sex pistols) and that anit-flag and bad religion are wicked cool. To the author of this I truley love how you talk about punks/and the music. I am a huge fan of the whole punk way of life. I come off more gothic to tell you the truth, but I have the punk attitude. SLC Punk was the best movie! It seriously is one of my favorites! My cousin (a ture die hard) got me into it. Liberty spikes to all you who dont now are long spikes that tower off your head. They are very cool.
Hmm.

Hey, Ive been thinking about it, and ive arrived at the conclusion that rawk and rock are two different things. Rawk is rock, but not all rock is rawk.
