Straight people don't tell, do they?

Post 1

"When Lisa during a coffee break at work tells her co-workers that she went to the movies with her husband last weekend, few think that she is talking about her heterosexuality - she is talking about her weekend. But when her colleague Larry mentions that he went to the movies with his husband last weekend, not all hear him only speak about his weekend, many think that he is also talking about his homosexuality." - Straight people don't tell, do they? -leaflet by Project Sexual and Gender Minorities at Work.

Funded by the European Social Fund and the Finnish Ministry of Labour, governed by the Department of Sociolofy at the University of Helsinki, the project has completed the first systematic large-scale analysis about the sexual and gender minorities at work in Finland. More about that when I've read it through. More information about the project at http://www.valt.helsinki.fi/sosio/tutkimus/equal/.

Most of the people don't understand what's wrong in thinking that way. That's the worst. smiley - erm

I completly agree with that. Homophobia is not fully understood enough. People think its screechign "fag"a nd all the verbal physicall abuse...but i think that the everyday things liek your example are just as bad and need adressing. I've even found (i dont work but am at college) that my college try and be "right on" to the extreme that they try and "highlight" gay students...and then they feel forced to be the "face of homosexuality" Which i don't htin is particulalry fair (plus the point that the gay students who are in the "limelight" are extremely camp which is again an unfair representation.

Hi awomantidalwave! Nice to meet you. smiley - smiley

Yep. But how can that kind of attitude be changed? The working life is too heteronormative; unfortunately even I can't see in the near future myself telling what movie I went to see with my boyfriend (if I had one, that is). There are some people who know but I don't feel comfortable coming out of the closet there. Though, that may very well be what "my kind" needs to do.

I quite strongly disagree with your college practise. It certainly is not fair to those gay students. I wouldn't feel good being "one of those gay guys". People should be treated with respect for just being people. Sexual preference - or any other quality a person cannot influence, for that matter - shouldn't have anything to do with the way they're treated.

A slight change - my best friend organized a ESC party and besides me and her there will be one our gay friend. So many cute guys singing this year, we'll definately have a lot of fun. smiley - drool

That just can't go wrong. I know of a girl who's having her best friend over and there will also be their gay friend. smiley - smiley We'll start tonight with the semifinals and continue on Saturday with the Big One. There might be some disagreement, though. We have too similar tastes in men.

I'll follow the semifinals from home, with kids. I have to w*rk tomorrow with other people so I have to skip the smiley - redwine and fun part. smiley - winkeye

"Skip the.. fun part"?!? smiley - yikes So you don't think that for example our hallelujah-song isn't fun?!? Shame on you! You should not think that, just Shake it! Believe me. Myself, I Can't wait until tonight. I'm gonna Celebrate and therefore I'm Stronger every minute. smiley - whistle

Luckily I'm having the rest of the week, no w*rk at all for me until Monday. Quite a coincidence. I wonder how that happened. smiley - winkeye (I've always said I'm a fanatic when it comes to the ESC).

Skip a part of the song contest? I don't understand. In what universe could that happen? smiley - huh Well, besides the one that's carried by four giant elephants standing on a big tortoise. And don't worry, I am confident the kids will eventually pick up the funny of it. smiley - smiley

I'm going to have to get going to the Party Place in an half an hour, so before I forget in all the excitement: good luck to Neiokõsõ!

That would work. We're going to live on crisps and cola. The ladies supposedly have also w*rk tomorrow. Not the best day really in the middle of the week.

Definitely. If this year is any indigation, I hope our broadcasting company learns its lesson and next year sends someone pretty. Never mind the music. Oh, that didn't help you and you *did* have five beautiful women. And a creepy guy with horns. Well, at least my vote got into the finals. (Yes, he was pretty smiley - winkeye)

I didn't vote at all. smiley - tongueout

Was there anybody from any other place than southern Europe to make it through the semifinals? Netherlands, methinks. That's it.
But yes, quite some nice men. smiley - winkeye
