I visited Hack Green two weeks ago and have been working on this since I got back. The issues it raised have been on my mind. Any comments please?
I'd particularly appreciate some advice (or where to find it) on when to include external web site links. I'm confused now on what we can and can't do. I did spend some tome looking on h2g2 for guidance, I know I've seen it somewhere .

Wow! Excellent!
typo: 'It's existence' -> 'Its existence'
Other than perhaps the admission fee, no questions left over.

As far as external links go, the "do's and don't's" are in the House Rules:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/HouseRules
Here's my summ-up:
1) You can have external links in guide entries, but not in forum postings or journals.
2) You cannot have a link to a commercial website (i.e., one whose primary intent is to sell you something) unless it is editorially justified. For example, if you were writing a book review, you could probably not link to Amazon and tell people to buy the book there. If, however, you were writing a objective, well-balanced review of a handy new gadget (like my LitterMaid entry), you could link to the corporate website with product details (but not to the Kmart website, even though they sell the LitterMaid).
3) You cannot have links to "inappropriate" sites. Use common sense here -- imagine a group of 10 randomly selected people - if several of them would be offended by something in the site, don't link to it. You also can't link to sites that are obviously "illegal" (i.e., sites with page after page of song lyrics, obviously in copyright violation), or to sites which encourage illegal behavior.
4) You cannot have broken links. So, test your links and make sure they work.
Hope this helps some!
Mikey

Oh, as to the links, in a nutshell:
* no BBC externals at all within fora,
* others only within entries,
* but no 'offending' ones.
'Offending' should be clear from common sense, but includes foreing languages as well. Even after the bunkers are gone, there's still a fear of invasion isn't it

Simultaneous thanks Bossel and Mikey. House rules, of course, thats where I saw the links bits! Corrections have been made, was that admission as one of the 135 or as a tourist Bossel? I did think of putting in the fee, currently £4.90 for adults, but its likely to change every year.
(scaffolding and other evidence of construction removed by stealth following early warning ).

Yes I was thinking of admission as a tourist, as I'm afraid I cannot afford the election campaign to become one of the 135 .
You should use the GuideML syntax for the external link because the doesn't insert the link into the 'Referenced sites' section in the right margin. --> Hack Green

Cracking entry.
pedantic point - guide recommends 1980s, 1990s etc as opposed to 1990's etc - I raised this once on Ask h2g2 as I could see why th e ' could be valid but the recommendation stands.
Spooky entry - a close family member was involved in the volunteer Civil defence network run by councils as was our alchoholic head mitress - luckily they were called upon.

GuideML links now in, referenced sites have appeared , and excess 's removed. Any opinions on when to use " and when to use ' ? I realised I've used both.
Cold turkey in a nuclear bunker , makes me even more curious about the 135. Although I'm not sure the volunteer civil defence got into the bunkers. I think they would have been outside being given orders from inside.
All I've found about selecting the 135 is a bit vague. Any (declassified) inside info ChawkE?

I think you are right, the Civil volunteers were left outside, I think the idea was that they took over or merged with any remants of local government. I hadn't though about it for ages till the other day when I saw a car with the car sticker they gave you, so in the event of all out devastation you wouldn't get a ticket when you parked on a double yellow.
Quote marks are single in h2g2 see http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/SubEditors-Style for full details of all the pedantic points needed fot a final entry.

Congratulations!
You may now safely exit from the bunker, as this entry has been recommended and will soon (err.. maybe not so terribly soon, but anyway) be featured very un-secretly on the h2g2 frontpage, for all the world to see. You will receive an email when that day has come.

When you've been in a bunker breathing air that's been recycled through 134 regional government officials for twelve weeks cold and rain are glorious!

Oh I can imagine what that means. Quoting from some other thread (don't know any more where) -- imagine four bean-fed Hillbillies in a Ford truck with the cabin closed
