There's also the 'Museum of Automata' and a smallish motor museum that's got a couple of James Bond's cars and some other semi-famous ones.

And Betty's Tea Rooms - expect to queue, especially if you want to sit in the window (and if you do, be sure to display your shopping bags prominently).

Sadly I think the museum of Automata has closed - it used to be very interesting.

Other places to look out for include:

- The Castle Museum (including recreated victorian street). Dedicate at least three quarters of a day.
- The races, one of the best racecourses in the country.
- The walls. Three and a half mile circular trip round the top of the walls.
- Try and find the grave of Dick Turpin - its in a very small graveyard off the tourist trail but within the city walls.
- Do the snickleway walk. A city walk covering the tiny weeny passages between buildings. Its really good fun.
- Something like 300 pubs within walking distance of the city centre.

You could also get the ubiquitous York tour bus - get on and off where you want.

If pubs take your interest, a few are on a street called "Micklegate".
From the train station, turn right and go over the bridge. To your right at the crossroads is "Blossom Street", the continuance of Micklegate, and to your left, through the castley-looking gate, is Micklegate. This you can drink in each, doing "The Micklegate Run".

As York has a long history, certain things have confusing names.
For example, roads are known as "gates", and gates are known as "bars".

Thus goes the saying:

York,
where the roads are gates,
the gates are bars,
and the bars are always open.

It's not true about Whip-ma-Whop-a-Gate - that's just a story saved for tourists.
Or Snickelways - they are a modern name for an old feature. They're snickets or alleys depending on the size.
But it is true that the Museum of Automata closed down.
