A Conversation for Preparing for Your First Day at University

Making friends

All that can be said about making friends at university is to go at it with all the verve and energy that you can muster. Go to all the open days, participate in every 'getting to know' event you can find, join as many societies as your mind can cope with and smile inanely at every person you bump into. By doing this you will find that there will be at least 42 other people doing exactly the same thing for exactly the same reason, and a common ground is found from which friendship easily grows. It also means that you wont be missing home life as much as you thought you might and university isn't quite as bad as all the horror stories suggest. Most of all, enjoy it, it only lasts three years:o)

Don't Panic. Everybody will tell you scary stories of how difficult university will be - exaninations, term papers and stuff. DO NOT BELIEVE THEM! While university WILL require you to do more than you ever did in school, you will find that you WILL manage. After all, the others did, too.

a good idea would be to go to every social gathering were alchohol is involved......making friends tends to get very easy at such social functions

The problem with the first few days at university is the shear number of people that you will meet.. so you can either rapidly develops an amazing memory for names and faces or.. you can make them remember you.. wander up to people while holding a rubber chicken.. show them your marbles (kept in your pocket so you can prove you havent lost them).. be the only girl with blue hair.. then when you meet them again they'll know who you are..

As the song goes ./~ if everybody looked the same, we'd get tired of looking at each other./~
As long as you feel comfortable with yourself there shouldn't really be any need to pull tricks to make yourself noticable. People want to meet people, not fictional characters. Then again, blue hair is a good idea *grin* I think my main problem when I started my degree was to be too shy, so be bold, be forward and be very self assured. As long as you have enough courage to get through the first week or so, you'll find that anything from then in will be a piece of smiley - cake
