Hiya Bx,

Um, I think it was because one of my flatmates at university. It comes from being supremely lazy, with "Steven" being a unmanageable two syllables and "Steve" being (um) one and a half (sort of) the supremely short "Ste" became my nickname. I'm known by Ste online mostly I suppose, around h2g2 primarily seeing as I rarely bother with IRC nowadays.

What film did he get it from?

BSc in Genetics, huh? That's precisely what degree I did at Cardiff Universitysmiley - biggrin, I graduated in 2000. Highly recommended. What makes you want to study genetics then?

Hi Ste,
He got it from a film called "beautiful thing" which is set in Thamemead, What a location! I got into genetics just by reading about the subject and studying the basics at school. It seems like fun! I was also diagnosed diabetic and someone told me it was mostly inherited so wanted to look into things like that. Im really interested in what cause all the genetic disorders and stuff and would like to specialise in it when i stop being a student and leeching off the government smiley - smiley How was your course and was the material interesting...Any books you suggest i get or read before i start the course???

Read the selfish gene by Dawkins. Nothing in biology makes any sense without a decent knowledge of evolution, and Dawkins really hits the nail on the head with this one. It explains a lot very clearly and simply. Any books by Steve Jones and Stephen Jay Gould are great.

College-level biology and genetics is far, far, far more interesting and fun than A level. A-levels are evil and dull. So you're in for a treat smiley - biggrin.

I got my BSc in genetics two years ago and now I'm working with the Rice Genome in San Diego (it helps to marry an American)! I'm hoping to start my PhD soon, I'm applying now.

Good luck,
