Hi aka (",) !

Here's the thing...

You may already have heard about this, but in 1898 an American novelist named Morgan Robertson wrote a story about an ocean liner, supposedly the world's safest, which hit an iceberg on its maiden voyage and sank with great loss of life - due to a shortage of lifeboats.

In the novel, the liner's name was the SS Titan.

And in 1935 a freighter named the Titanian was crossing the north Atlantic when one of the crewmen had a sudden sense of danger. He warned the bridge of danger ahead, and as the ship slowed an iceberg appeared dead ahead. The Titanian struck it but did not sink.

Twice was a coincidence, three times...?

(And the crewman who had the premonition was born in 1912 - on the day the Titanic sank.)

Freaky, wot?

Well, I Could go into what coincidence is believed to be to some people, but I've not long woken up and I feel I might mess it up and look stupid smiley - weird..

But, depending on what your views on what coincidence is; be it oh.. isn't that weird..

1) "what are the odds of those two things happening again/at the same time/at all" or

2) The theory of parallel universes and the like taking off when the two things happen (three, in this case)

But this is slightly more interesting as the third time it didn't sink; the second time; The number 3 is usually associated with luck - Whether Good or Bad; and I Myself would've expected the Titanic to be the third ship in this line of events.. Wouldn't you?

But anyway, Most of my articles, by pure chance, have had the Titanic Featured in them, in some way.. be it Issue 4 or Haunted World; Helena Blundel and the old mill, where the Titanic is briefly mentioned, or the latest issue about prophecies, featuring the story about Mrs. Prentice the old psychic. (3/Jan/02), So I will try to use this in some way, and may even base something on it if I can find Reasonable proof from a reliable source smiley - smiley Thanks, by the way smiley - smiley

And, while I have you here, do you have any suggestions for the article? - as I really appreciate criticism.. constructive or otherwise smiley - smiley

(And, it is a fact, that readerships, ratings and audience serveys prove that more skeptics read/watch/listen to articles/shows of this nature.. and more people on h2g2 seem to me, to be quite skeptical about some aspects of the unknown.. So, hey.. Let's see how far it will grow smiley - winkeye)

Thanks Awix smiley - smiley

Possibly the skepticism is due to the fact that this is a Douglas Adams-inspired site, whose own tendencies were to be extremely skeptical and rationalistic - hence his close friendship with the fanatical mechanist Richard Dawkins.

And I think there's definitely some truth to the suggestion that this sort of thing goes on all the time without being noticed, and also frequently 'nearly' happens... I'll have to dig out the literature on it. Certainly the odd coincidence doesn't impress me much but the whole Titan-Titanic-Titanian thing does seem extraordinarily unlikely to just be chance (especially the double coincidence of the crewman's birthday).

The psychologist Jung had a theory about synchronicity, where significant events were linked in an acausal mannner (ie they were connected somehow but not in the usual 'cause and effect' manner). I've heard it explained in terms of raisins 'clumping' inside fruitcake - by the laws of probability they should be evenly spread but a lot of the time they clump together for no apparent reason. In the same way significant events 'clump' in the form of coincidences.

I have nothing to add smiley - smiley

As I've only ever *read*, but not much *heard* of Jung - Tell me, it *is* pronounced "Young" isn't it? smiley - erm

Oh, and Most poeple I know who mention Jung, almost always try and squeeze in a quick plug for Freud (Which is also pronounced 'Froid') - Are you a Freud Fan? smiley - smiley

Only insofar as his work informs the psychology of the incredible Hulk. smiley - smiley

Unfortunately my knowledge of psychology is limited to cognitive science and philosophy of mind, but even so, Jung's theories about archetypes make a lot of sense to me. (Mainly in the way they talk about the human race in terms of the stories we tell.)

As far as the collective unconscious goes... I'm an agnostic.

Oh, ok, smiley - coolsmiley - smiley

I first learnt about Freud's theories and a little about Jung from when I first became interested in the mind - particularly dreams and the analysis - which I'll be covering soon hopefully, as it's one of my favourite subjects smiley - smiley I find that when you say that you can analyse somebody's dreams for them, they hound you with oh, what does mine mean, what does mine mean? So when I do cover this, I'll have to try and span it across a few issues, me thinks.. smiley - erm Unless of course user input isn't as great as I'd had thought ...

Anyway, Funny thing, as we're talking about it, the mind.. I initially came here with something in particular to say, but now it escapes me smiley - sadface

Nevermind.. Oh wait.. I remember now smiley - smiley

Do you know the name of the philosopher who said:

"Last night I dreamed I was a butterfly.

But who is to say that I am not now a Butterfly dreaming I am a man? And that Last night I was in my wakeful state?"

- Of course I'm paraphrasing, otherwise I'd ..

1) Get that spot on for quoting, and
2) Not need to know who said it because I'd know from the source I was quoting smiley - smiley

FABT - new venture A815654 Angel spoiler page

back to the titanic thing,

why did they name the titanic the titanic. i know it means giant and all the godly associations etc. but was there a specific reason for the name. i.e. like QEII is a pretty specific reason. and if there was no REAL reason for the name titanic then didnt anyone associate it with the book. or was the book very unknown.

i like this subject. interested now

I think cos it was just such a bloomin' big ship, FABT. smiley - smiley

The butterfly guy was, I think (and I should know cos he was majorly on my curriculum at university), the famous French philosopher and draft-dodger Rene Descartes.

'I think, therefore I'm hiding in an oven,' to paraphrase the great man...

Aah.. just bringing up that "I Think therefore I am" thing brings up memories of where you find out about Deep Thought in the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the galaxy -

"By the time it had been plugged in, it had already got down to reducing the ingredients of Rice Pudding and "I think, Therefore I am", before anybody had had a chance to turn it off" - To paraphrase Another Great man reading Another great man's great words.. Peter Jones as the Book, in the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy -- obviously, by Douglas Adams smiley - smiley

Anyways smiley - smiley I'm just checking my messages and then finishing the article for this week -- Hope you enjoy it this week; It's the first time I have been able to use reader input smiley - smiley

I don't know, I think with both the world wars there was an element of conflict being inevitable sooner or later, no matter which individuals were involved - given the economic and political situation in Germany in the early 1930s.

Pirate Alexander LeGray

Hi aka (",) !
Strange experiences follow me around all my life: I try to resolve them by rational explanation.

Chilcompton is a rather chilling name for a village near Bath, and I had two chilling, no down right frightening experiences there.

Mostly people think of ghosts as only a visual phenomena, distanced by their emptiness, such as the image of a man with a handlebar moustache in a green check suit, whose reflection gazed at me in a mirror at Warwick Castle.
But this was different:

It was near midnight, I was in a deserted factory yard doing my job. It was a clear night, stars lit the area where security guards would not work.It was quiet, this was a village without a main road or street lighting nearby.

A man appeared about five feet away, he had an inquiring look on his face as he stared at me.

He was thin and old, about five foot six, he stood upright, despite his age appeared fit, with long white straggly hair down his grey face, his nose longer than average and had crooked teeth.

The grey face stood out as peculiar, as did his hessian sleeveless jacket, and billowy white cotton shirt. He was wearing black trousers held up by string, and brown leather shoes.

I noticed a broken shotgun slung over his right arm.

His features, although normal, were unbearable for me to face. I was struck by an irrational fear.

He said, "You've had a long life and an amazing number of experiences, but its not over yet and you have one more thing to do."

Their was a loud bang, a warm liquid wet my side facing him, the birds beat an escape overhead, as I did.

Once out of the yard I was instantly dry, and no evidence of the man existed.

That's the story, as accurately as I can remember it, the exact words used by the man escape me, but the meaning is the same. At first I thought he was talking to me, in fact I did not think of him as a ghost and was not even frightened until he got really close, because his appearance looked normal except for the greyness of his skin.
I can guarantee, this place is haunted, and I'm used to going to dark unfriendly places late at night, never thinking about ghosts or seeing any.
