Yeah I know London is a bit of a b**ch--I visited there in '94 and met people feeling the same way you are. Canberra, Australia (where I live) is much the same in the sense that once you get a job, find a house, have kids ect you get stuck here and can't seem to dig your way out of the bottomless pit. Thankfully however our aesthetics are much better than those of London.
I can't offer a solution but can present condolences, and a bit of empathy.
By the way, your GuideML is awesome! Is it okay if I ask for a few tips on how to get started with it?
