right now I should be writing about how Joe Conrad Korzeniowski's Heart of Darkness is actually a taoist fable. so you see, I'm trying to keep myself away from the paper. By trying, I am inadvertently writing about my paper through my description of my own procrastination. So, either consciously or unconsciously, (or both, or all, isn't this taoism we're talking about?) I'm working on it. I wonder how procrastination fits into the taoist worldview. Wu wei..one does what one has to do without attachment..or is that Buddhism..is there any difference? So I'm avoiding what I have to do without attachment to avoiding it (since I really am working on my paper, right?) So Kurtz represents the antithesis to the spirit of Wu-wei because his ego's behind all his actions. He wants to make a name for himself. He wants to be big and rich and famous. And his beloved believes him in all of this. She wants to share in the bigness, the sheer bigitude, the bigifacy of his ego. The imperialism is all a part of that ego-laden action, trying to impose the supposed goodness of Western ideas upon those poor "mindless" savages. The conquest of the ego against the darkness. The light of the conscious mind against the scariness of the unconscious. Can't we all just get along? Marlow, he buys into the whole imperialist game, too, he can't help it, can he, he's a young, cultured European chap. But he's wise enough to see something askew in the way it's all set up. (He just came back from a sea voyage to the East, that may have had something to do with it...wink wink) So when he goes over there and sees all that darkness, "the horror, the horror," he comes back and doesn't want anybody to know about it. Even the sham of "justice" that Kurtz wanted was not served by Marlow because he had to preserve that infernal idea of the ego, and to do it, he had to lie. Oh, the horror!
by the way, i know next to nothing both about taoism and joseph conrad, so if anybody reads this and has anything to offer, I'd really appreciate it! The paper's due tomorrow.
