Recently (2008) a group in Dubois Penna called Finders Keepers Inc., claims to know where the lost Army Gold from 1863 is located. The state of Pennsylvania has forbidden them to dig on STATE FOREST LAND. The group has located an old rifle bullet and a whiskey bottle. They gave them to the state as proof and the state refused to return them.
Court action may be next. Check for details in the Emorium (Pa) newspaper www.endeavornews.com and click on the left where it says
"news archive". There were several articles a couple weeks ago.
Another site is www.coudy.com which is from COudersport Pa and has several links to local legends.
Good hunting...........

I am from the area they are searching. i myself am from DuBois and just using the photos of the bullet kinda speaks words too me just remember that civil war technology was heading forward but mos of your pistols and rifles in 1863 used by the us army were. minnie ball and even the colts and remingtons were not really cartridge yet.unless a company was issued spenser rifles which had just basically gone into service but too me it does not look like a spenser cartridge it looks more like a model 1873 winchester cartridge. Also the government had issued smiths around then which where rubber cartridged bullets. but most of your cartridge bullets were in the 50 caliber and above range.but weapon of choice was still the smooth bores by the high command of the us army ordinance.bu thats just my opinion. if this land is a good ambush site i may agree with them. but i do not know that land .if it was not a good ambush site they need too look a bit further just my 2 cents and i am no expert. but maybe they did find it good for them if they did

i did some more research on the area took a look at some topo maps and discussed some of the area with a local if this unit of soldiers went down through Dents run,and was being followed by locals from st. marys the locals would have known to cross over the mountains which too this day is considered the best route, by a crew to set an ambush for the troopers. they could be ahead of them by hours and sit and wait for them too roll through the valley area especially at some narrow spots and just picked them off one by one.and getting back too the bullets again most cartridges were paper wads then and that casing is defenitely not a henry casing either nor is it a smith and wesson model 2 army cartridge. but too me and the other gentlemen it would seem likely anyone with knowledge of the area could have ambushed them from above

This story of the Lost Army gold bars has been around for years. No one ever claimed to have found its location until now. While they found a cartridge and a liquor bottle, the old story I heard said that the one guy (a guide) stumbled out of the woods near Lock Haven with a half bar of gold and was put in the Army and sent to the Western front never to retire.

As I remember the story ten years ago it said that his story was that
they had all come down with a fever and all died. He buried them and the gold and then took his half-bar and found his way along the river to Lock Haven.

Don't know if this complies with current stories but if there is GOLD there, I hope they find it.
