What about Dennis the Small indeed?
The Wikipedia claims that it was not the V. Bede, but Dionysius Exiguus (Dennis the Small- see http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dionysius_Exiguus ) who first proposed numbering years from Jesus' birth, though Bede seems to have started the 'A.D.' convention.
As it is, Dennis mucked it up; his Year 1 A.D. was 2 years late. Which means that, interestingly, Jesus was born in the year 2 B.C.
