My thoughts & those of my friends and family are with Douglas' wife, daughter, family & friends at this terrible time.
I have a confession to make. I stole the only copy of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy out of our school library. Well I borrowed it and never returned it. It was an incredibly selfish thing to do as I have probably deprived a lot of Wally Hall gals of the pleasure of reading it.
But it is so important to me because when I am low or depressed it is the first thing I turn too. Every time. The first time I read it was when I was about 14 and on a school trip. I was incredibly homesick but just picking up the book seemed to soothe my troubles. One of the most recent was when I was had a serious infection in my leg in South Africa because it reminded me of home.
I remember seeing the South Bank Show special on you when I was about 17 and thinking "I want to work for you". To have had the opportunity and all the opportunities it has in turn bought me is one of the greatest gifts life has given me.
