Was wondering if anyone can help? There is a pub in Whitechapel that is called the Blind Beggar (and v.nice it is too!). I have heard it has something to do with the Krays - either it was their local or had something to do with the shooting/stabbing of Jack "the hat" McVitie, but not sure what the connection is exactly. Can anyone shed any light?

I believe that George Cornell was shot in the Blind Beggar. Jack "The Hat" McVitie was killed in Evering Road, Upper Clapton.

The pub gets its name from Henry de Montfort, who used to beg in that area after he was maimed at the Battle of Evesham in 1265. He was known as "The Blind Beggar of Bednal Greene" and was immortalised in a seventeenth century play of that name.
Ronnie Kray shot and killed George Cornell here in 1966 (because, allegedly, Cornell called Kray "a fat poof")
