I'm pleased to see Guides on h2g2

One small correction:
Current Uniform consists of a navy blue sweatshirt or t-shirt. The badge sashes are gone (no big loss!) and we now have "gilets" (fleeces minus sleeves). This is apparently the only place the girls can stitch their badges!

When did the badge sash go? Must have been fairly recently, I thought it was a pretty daft idea too, but only having the gilet to put badges on seems a bit off - surely there must be a better idea than that out there?

BTW, have the Brownies lost their badge sash too?

The badge sash was phased out over the last 6 - 9 months. The brownies still have theirs, but that age range aren't so self concious.

Re the gilet! None of the girls in my unit have bought one. They buy 1 piece of uniform at a time, and of course the top is first! As a result, nowhere to display to the badges they've worked so hard for.

I would welcome any bright ideas for badge display.

That makes me fell a little better - this entry was written about November-ish last year, probably just as the phase out was happening, although for various resons this entry didn't go into the edited guide until a lot later than that. That's one problem with the Edited Guide - keeping things up-to-date - which is one reason why I'm pleased you've taken the time & trouble to correct me on this.

No bright ideas here on the badge quandry I'm afraid - it seems such a shame not to show them off though - all that hard work and I always found the 'friendly rivalry' (for want of a better phrase) of having them on show spurred everyone to greater efforts.

And I've still got all my badges - sewn onto my old camping blanket - complete with the Brownie ones and the camp ones.

I'm very impressed that you transferred your badges to your camp blanket. One of my regrets is that all my guide badges are lost . My camp blanket just has two badges. The millenium commemoration one and the one from my first camp as a Guider at Ellesborough in Bucks. I'm just back from being first-aider at our District camp however, so I have got one more to stitch on now.

It was our last meeting of the term yesterday, so I have got 6 weeks now to come up with another term of scintillating ideas! Do you have any involvement with Guides at the moment?

I haven't been directly involved with the Guides for quite some time now, but when I saw the University project on Girl Scouts of the USA, http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A427619 I couldn't let that go without adding what I could for the UK Guide association. Writing those entries really bought back some fond memories.

Camp was great, of course, not enough eggy bread, and a small scare with police helicopters hovering overhead at 2am on the first night. Of course, the girls made up ever more ludicrous stories about this. Everything from escaped lions from the local wildlife park to mass murderers!

Hi AEndr, sorry it has taken so long for me to get back on h2g2. The last 6 months were manic, and I just thought I'd check back and see how things were. I've seen your pitch on the campsite and think it is excellent. Of course I instantly recognised the soaping trick. We call it "greasing". Do You?

I am now planning camp 2003 - I'll be taking my licence this year!

We call it "blacking" - because it goes that colour pretty quickly, though starting off white - and at the end of the camp, we de-black (which of course, involves getting the Guides as black as possible )

Are you on GuidingUK (yahoogroups) perhaps - if so, you will recognise me - give me a wave if you are. I'm going to be moving soonish myself - off to Berkshire for 6 months, then Devon - as I start a proper job and then it moves location. I won't be on much from April till I settle in and get an internet connection.

Also, you can sew badges on your camp blanket,too.

Our guide unit is the same, but we still use the old uniforms as none of us like the new one. Guides from our unit either sew their badges on their "handmade camp blankets" we made on a craft night or sew them down the sleeve of their jumpers.
