Outside h2g2 I have participated in The Stone, which is a sort of a site dedicated to people who are into really (and I do mean really) fiendishly difficult puzzles. There is a community side to it, but from what I've observed the members tend to concentrate on puzlze solving rather than socialising.

Also, unlike h2g2 there is an initial one-off cost for joining, in the form of a rather nice looking black stone necklace with strange symbols on it. You do need a stone to participate in the main puzzles (the Enigma), but there are freely accessable puzzles (the Unknown) for everyone to try before they go out and buy a stone.

Have a look for yourself and find out more at http://www.thestone.com

(Also, if there are any Stoners here, could you pop over to my userspace as I need a few nudges on some of the early puzzles).

That sounds really interesting Croz, I'll go and check it out. Have you been to any *other* communities? I joined Vavo and a few others to see how they do things, but I haven't really had the time to participate in them to any great extent.

I tried some others myself.... but I have found that in here(if 'here' has an inside) there is a greater community sense than anywhere else.
I feel a group hug coming on!

ahhh you are missing out the nose 8 - ) without the spaces becomes smiley - bigeyes.

I have found lots of portals aimed at woman that have a basic community set up (mainly chat rooms) Handbag.com is one - but now I just use their free email. I wonder how successful community sites aimed at just women or men are really?
