You can call me TC

At the weekend I bought a slice of shin of beef and boiled it up last night with all the leftover vegetables which weren't mouldy yet that were mooning around in the fridge. A real broth, like in the old days. I'm enjoying a plate of it now. It is absolutely perfect. OK you get the odd chewy bit of meat or stringy bit of veg, but the broth itself tastes fine, just the thing now the evening has cooled off and I'm at home on my own.

So many things get thrown away, and yet here I am enjoying an entire meal with stuff that could have ended up in the bin. OK I had to buy the meat, which probably made the difference. I got to eat the nice chunk of bone marrow too.

There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho

I do this myself from time to time, and even when I don't virtually no food gets thrown away at Fort Gosho, apart from the odd loaf-end which gets tossed because there are so many spores in the air around here, and between May and October it's so warm, that bread will go mouldy within a few days if you forget to put it in the fridge.

My parents, both of whom lived through the 30s and the depression, did a very good job of drumming frugality and a hate of throwing away food into me.

Hmm, I haven't had a nice piece of shin for a long time now. It's great for soup and stew.

I'm a forties baby and we were frugal. It stays with you.

But it seems prodigality is also hard to unlearn.

That is so true, it sticks in your psyche forever I think. I do my best to pass the habit on but it is not easy. I think we are all going to have to practise it soon they way things are going

Trouble is, we are not actually at war, so there's nobody we can wholeheartedly blame while we grit our teeth. Instead we make protests against austerity, as though we had a right to endless economic growth.
