I probably come across as a right humbug on the food threads where the likes of Bea and Mu Beta are extolling recipes containing huge amounts of spices and chillis and stuff - most of which isn't even available in Germany. And I counteract with very bland dishes which is what I lean towards when cooking or eating.
But today I'm trying out a recipe which is basically a broccoli soup with meaty dumplings in it. I've been waiting ages to make this, but could never get hold of the veal which the recipe asks for, so I've gone for pork. The interesting bit is that a huge lump of fresh ginger is grated and mixed in with the minced meat. Also grated lemon rind, seasonings and spices, an egg
and some breadcrumbs to solidify the dumplings. They are served in a soup which is just boiled and pureed broccoli. In the recipe it gives 3/4 litre of stock, which is too much: the soup could be a little thicker. It has no thickening as such, just a little cream. Seasoned with lemon juice, curry powder, mustard etc.
All sounds very hot and spicy, and I am liking it. Not like me at all!
Our little cookery club is on hold this week because most people are off work for the Carnival season.
