I'm glad I watched the IT crowd before the Big Bang Theory, though. As much as you just want to hug Roy and Moss, the Big Bang guys really are a laugh a line.

Two series I've enjoyed recently are basically a BBC and an American take on the same subject:

Outnumbered (BBC)
Modern Family (American)

They are both excellent and anybody who has lived in a family should enjoy either.

I've seen an episode of Outnumbered - they really are great fun.

Is the American one half-improvised, too?

No. Its interesting feature is that the action is interrupted to have interviews with the characters to explain what they are thinking at the time.
