Hello HighTekVagabond! and welcome to H2G2.smiley - fish
We all have a great time here! smiley - bigeyes
You sound like just the kind of person we need in the Guide...
As you go round meeting people they will get to know you & what you are into...smiley - smiley
Another good way to find like-minded people is to write a Guide Entry, then submit it to the Guide, and other Researchers will read it & comment on it. A great way to make new friends! smiley - bigeyes
Well, I came here to greet you, so here's the set greeting:-
I am an Archangel, a fellow Researcher who has volunteered to help and guide new Researchers if they need it.
Thank you for joining our online community and I am sure you are going to have a great time here.

Wow, I totaly missed this just sitting right here for a whole week....

I've pretty much got the concept down, and know what is going on, but I'm kinda bored with the whole thing. Its cumbersome to find a fun thread and when I do responses are slow if at all. *shrugs* I generaly try not to critisize something without giving a thought or direction to solution, but this place is built around chaos (which is really part of it's charm) so I don't know an answer, the cumbersomeness of finding good theads is inherrent to the concept.

yeah, the smilies are just like everywhere else, except they dont always seem to show up as smiles when I do them, alot of the time they show up as the ascii charicters.

I will check out the pages you listed though. smiley - smiley

Thanks for the help.

If the smileys don't work properly, you may be forgetting the noses, like you did above. I've heard rumours of new smileys being drawn up for some time in the near future, including some really odd ones.

If you've become bored with things already, have you tried writing something for inclusion into the Edited Guide? I find that to be really satisfying - it's what has kept things fresh for me for the past year. There are some interesting projects at the h2g2 University http://www.h2g2.com/university or you could go to the ask h2g2 page at http://www.h2g2.com/Askh2g2 and ask if anyone wants to collaborate on an entry on some topic which interests you.

You don't need to be a professional to write here, check out the writing guidelines and get going http://www.h2g2.com/writing-guidelines

What do you do for a living, what are your hobbies, where do you live?

All really good topics for Guide entries. smiley - smiley

I have written guide entries about things I am interested in...one was a total fluke. Not many people have heard of Giordano Bruno but he is immortalized now, thanks to me. Use the "search" and type his name. You may find something along the way which will inspire you, as I was inspired.smiley - smiley

I live in Minnesota and am Director of Information Technology for an Inetnet consulting firm. Both of which are well documented and rather bland topics.

There's a guide entry about Minnesota?

I'll want to check that out...

ok ok ok ok ok

You've got me thinking...

I can write an Entry on Hitch Hiking in the US (I spent 3 years doing this)

And one on Shar Pei's (The dogs I have.... those are the wrinkly ones)

And I already wrote something a while ago to explain Domain Name Service which is one of the big mysteries of how the Internet works for most people, I could turn that into an entry....

I don't really know much about Minnesotta, and am moving to Winona Minnesotta in about a week, so maybe I will just research that town once I am there. *shrugs*

OK, I have topics smiley - tongueout

Well, I figured I'd start with some stuff that I'd already written and just didn't have a home for... I had a great one on DNS but can't seem to find it but I did find the one I wrote about Web Cookies and posted it.... I'm not sure I follow what the proccess is supposed to be though now to ask to have it be an edited entry.... I can't spell worth a darn and my grammer is not so great so I could use a sub editor or whatever you call them on it.... so, what now?

You might want to go through the text and fix up some of the more obvious things. It ends kind of funny - something about dogs?

Anyway. Once you've got an entry in the format you want, go to the Peer Review page at http://www.h2g2.com/PeerReview and create a new conversation about your entry in the forum's title call it "A462610 - Cookies" And give the page's url in the text of the forum as well as some handy information.

Then a Scout will see the page and read it and make suggestions on changing it to fit better with the style of the Edited Guide or fixing bits that were confusing. As will others hopefully...

Then after all that feedback, one of the Scouts will recommend it for inclusion if someone feels it's up to snuff. Then the full-timers at h2g2 will read it and agree or disagree with the Scout's recommendation. If they agree, it'll join the queue of entries heading off to the Subeditors. When the Subeditors are done with it, it'll go back to the full-timers for a final proofing. Then it joins the queue for the front page, unless it needs artwork, in which case it takes a detour to the art team before joining the front page queue.

After all of that, the day it is featured on the front page, you'll get an email from Mark telling you that you made it.

It sounds like some awful process, but it's really not too bad. smiley - smiley

Hope that helps!
