Gnomon - time to move on Started conversation Mar 5, 2014
It's nice to see daylight again. When I woke up this morning at 7 it was already bright. Such a change from going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark.
Soon it will start to get warm - it's still single-figure temperatures here in Ireland. I want to get back to my High Cross Hunt, which I've been pursuing since Summer 2012. I've visited nearly all the major high cross sites in Ireland, and am working on an entry A986501 presenting the results, but there are two sites I need to visit, and I need a bit of sunshine in order to take good photos. Perhaps this weekend...

I noticed the same thing this morning - the air was brighter, cleaner, fresher - quite in tune with the cleansing aspect of Ash Wednesday and all it evokes. Even my bike seemed to run more smoothly and it felt like a new beginning. Time for Lenten resolutions and spring cleaning!

It is better here too both night and morning, and except for a couple of frosts it has been very mild. I haven't lit my coal fire for ages.
The extra light really lifts my mood and i can't wait to get in the garden and tidy up the wreckage that winter has brought. Mind you, I am not entirely confident we have seen the last of the nasty stuff.
We must keep our fingers crossed!

As soon as it stops raining, I'll be able to ride outside after work!

I was running a few minutes late this morning. By the time I got to work, it was nearly dawn.
Come Monday I'll be back in the dark due to DST being expanded by Dubya. Summer time now starts in Winter and is 8 months long.

Our Summer Time starts later (last Sunday in March), but our Spring starts earlier (1st of March).

Dubya ruined one of my favorite "bar bets". It used to go as follows.
Q: "What is the *second* shortest month of the year?"
A: "April, because of DST it's 29 days and 23 hours."
Similarly, October used to be the longest month of the year at 31 days, 1 hour.

I am of the old school that says spring begins with St Brigid's day, 1st February.
The advantage of that is that it puts midsummer in the middle of summer and midwinter in the middle of winter, and the equinoxes in the middle of autumn and spring.
The disadvantage is that the cold weather comes in spring, as the old saying put it.
