Gnomon - time to move on

I had, but I've forgotten it. The Aces are generally experts at figuring out when people joined, as they have a tool for showing who joined in each week (or at least they used to have).

It wasn't Duncan was it? Very early on he had a type of earthquake thread that randomly assigned the reader to other conversations.smiley - starsmiley - star

I think that site might contain a virus, I looked at it bit and had to scrub my system.

Might be a good one to nuke!

It's not actually a virus. It takes control of your browser, but it doesn't replicate. Stopping and starting the browser gets rid of the effect. It is probably dangerous code though, as there might be some variant of it could do nasty stuff. I might ask for it to be hidden just to stop malicious coders from seeing it.

I had weird problems today when looking at an Entry and the h2g2 homepage - "Internet Explorer's Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) Filter modified the webpage to help protect your privacy and security"

It also happened when I looked at w*k*pedia, though.

Hopefully the problem was not caused by something on my computer...

I think I may have solved my problemsmiley - shrug

Having been raised by the 'Thumper Rule' (US film 'Bambi' - 'If you can't say something nice about somebody, you shouldn't say nothin' at allsmiley - biggrin). The best I can tell my problem seems to have been called by a hijacking of Google Chrome. I am not certain, but removal of the program, and a few purges seem to have offered at least temporary relief. One of my biggest concerns was that the 'threat' was recognized by Ripley, but not in Pliny.

I am not complaining, but I would certainly feel better If I knew our site was safe from virus threats.

Thank you for all your hard work!

I'm sorry if I exposed your computer to a threat by telling you about this entry. I will certainly get this entry hidden eventually. But I want to understand it first, to make sure that such a threat can't be used against the site.

I just ran into something weird writing post 13 for "Doing Some Writing".

While was writing near the end of the 1st clause of the 3rd sentence, a body of text was randomized through the remainder of the post so I had to go back and make corrections on each line and nearly completely rewrite the 3rd one.

Very strange.

That sounds strange. What browser are you using?

Firefox 22, alternating between Pliny And Brunel.

...it was like the text shattered and and scattered...

I use Firefox 22 as well, and I sometimes encounter strange effects, although I haven't seen that one.

Ditto.

22 is definitely not the most trouble free version of Firefox to date.

It initially lost my bookmarks toolbar feature, then subsequently crashed and disappeared from my menu and I needed to resort to backups and reinstall to bring everything back.

I attempted to uninstall before the reinstall, but none of my uninstall programs could find it.

I recently got Netflix, and though it says that Chrome is not supported, it works perfectly on Chrome, and I couldn't get it to start on Firefox 21 at all. Kept asking me to download Silverlight after I already had, and had shut down and restarted, and all.

I've got the moderators to hide the weird entry linked to in post 1 of this conversation, as I don't want any hackers to study the method used in it.

TRiG (Ireland) A dog, so bade in office

Firefox sometimes goes quite odd for me when I'm editing text, but the actual text isn't messed up: just the display. Scrolling it offscreen and then on again is usually enough to clear things up. (For me, this happens more often on Linux than on Windows.)
