Gnomon - time to move on Started conversation Nov 30, 2012
I see that today's Bing picture (at least for me) is a view of Edinburgh, with the Stewart Monument in the foreground. I can also see that the Stewart Monument, which I had never heard of before, is based on the Lysicrates Monument in Athens, which dates to about 350 BC.
This reminds me that I haven't written up my trip to Athens yet. I'll have to start soon, but I'm busy rehearsing for concerts on Saturday and Thursday.

Don't they call it 'The Athens of the North'?
Somehow sounds more exotic than 'The Edinburgh of the South'.

I sometimes go to Bruges, also known as 'The Birmingham of the Continent'. Possibly...

Why does everybody pick on Bruges? It's a lovely town.
And I can't wait to read about your peregrinations, Gnomon.
