Gnomon - time to move on

I've resigned from the post of Guide Editor.

It just wasn't working out for me. I'm too much of a perfectionist. As a sub-editor I can keep working on an entry until it is ready and then return it to the Editors. But as Guide Editor, I felt responsible for the whole guide, and couldn't let anything be published unless it was absolutely up to my standards. This meant that I had to do everything myself, which was just too much. It was driving my crazy. I couldn't sleep and I couldn't think of anything except the Guide.

So I took a sabbatical of a few months, but it wasn't any better when I got back. I need to get back to doing things I enjoy. So I'll continue as a curator and a sub-editor if the Eds want me, but I'm not going to "Guide-Edit" again.

Lack of sleep, maybe? smiley - winkeye

I'm sure no one can doubt your dedication to the Guide, but I think you're right. If it starts to mess up your life, and your night's sleep, then it is probably time to step away.

Hey, you can get back to writing entries yourself now, right? smiley - ok

It's tough writing guide entries having previously held that office. You may never shed the burden of responsibility.

Difficult boots to fill. If I had the time I'd do it, but I haven't so I can't.

I am sorry too, but I am happy that you'll be around as a go-to guy. Nobody knows more than you about guide entries. I hope you'll get to subedit my entries in the new year, if the world doesn't end in December that is.smiley - hug

Is your wife going to find a penpal in Greece so she can use her Greek? That would be fun and awesome. Maybe she could put an ad in the Athens News or something like Craigslist.

Maybe when you write up your adventures you could include Mrs G's experiences with learning Greek. That would be interesting for smiley - thepost readers.

After living in Germany for a number of years, Greek culture came as a shock when we moved there. There is definately differences in Mediterraen and northern European mindsets in how everyday life is lived. Not better or worse, mind you, but DIFFERENT. Such things as driving, reactions to traffic accidents, retailing things in shops and fixing stuff. No wonder the EU has problems getting everyone on the same page financially.
