My Day Off
Gnomon - time to move on Started conversation Nov 25, 2010
I don't work on Wednesdays. I decided a few years ago that it would be nicer to have a four-day week, so the day I chose to take off is Wednesday, because it divides the week into two short periods. For me, Tuesday and Friday are OK, because they're only one day to go to my day off, and Monday and Thursday are not too bad because I've just had a break, and they are choir days so I have that to look forward to.
I don't always get much rest on my Wednesday, though.
Drove Mrs G to the tram for 8.
Drove Iz to school for 9.
Drove El to the tram for 10:30.
Played Bejewelled Blitz for about 15 minutes, and got a high score without using boosts of 340,000. Not good enough to beat Galaxy Babe and Fizzymouse, but then, it never is.
Went to Smith's Toy Shop and looked at Xboxes. The daughters want one between them for Christmas. Went to Woodies DIY (next door to the toy shop) and bought a large piece of wood - 12mm plywood. It was 8 feet by 4 feet, so I had great fun getting it back to the car, particularly since Woodies do not provide proper trolleys for transporting of large pieces of wood. They only have the standard shopping trolley and that's not a lot of use for a huge board. I just carried it. Got it on the roof of the car and tied it on with three separate lengths of rope. Drove home at about 20mph to prevent the wind from carry the board and the car off into the sky. I intend to make some model reindeers out of the wood, based on a model I saw in Florida. I didn't have time to start work on them, so I just propped the wood up in the corner of the kitchen. Now I'll have to work on it over the weekend, as it is in the way.
Iz arrived home and we had lunch.
Drove to Dundrum Town Centre (one of the biggest shopping centres in Ireland) with Iz and bought her some shoes for school. They have to be black, respectable, and suitable for walking in. Luckily Iz doesn't need heels. She feels she is tall enough, although she's a good three inches smaller than her mother. We then looked around the shopping centre for potential Christmas presents. I made a quick trip into the supermarket to buy bread, then down to the cinema to book tickets for Harry Potter for Saturday night.
Drove back home, then it was time for me to go to the physiotherapist. I've never visited one before. I hurt my shoulder in August and thought it would get better, but it's been getting steadily worse so I reckon something had to be done. He worked on the shoulder and gave me exercises to do.
When I got home from the physio, I drove out to the Toy Shop again and bought the XBOX, complete with a few games, so that's the first two Christmas Presents bought. Then I got home and started to cook the dinner - Mrs G rang up in the middle of that and I collected her from the tram stop.
My father arrived up at 8:30 for his usual Wednesday evening visit and we chatted and had a glass of wine. Mrs G went and collect El from the tram at 9:15 - she'd had a long day in college - and then we sat down for dinner. My dad left at about 10 and then we all sat down to watch Fry and Laurie on the television. At about 11:45 I had to rip some tracks off our choir CD to send to a radio station who are doing a promotion of our concert, then I was ready for bed at about 12:00.
A typical day off.
