Gnomon - time to move on

In my work, I've been heavily involved for the last year in a project to upgrade all our servers to a new version of the operating system, and all the J2EE applications to a newer version of their environment.

This has meant preparing about 20 new computers, getting them exactly right, and moving all our web-based applications over onto them. The last one was shifted over on Thursday last - we had a few minor problems with some of them, which we were able to sort out after the event, but the first application to give us a major problem was the very last one to be moved - it was probably kept until last because it was most likely to fail. We had to move it back again, and spent Friday fixing the problem.

Now everything is done, as far as I can tell, so this weekend has been a great relief for me. No longer will I have to be in at 8 every morning, and I'll be able to take some days off now - I wasn't really able to during May and June. So I'm taking three weeks between July and August, and possibly one in September as well.

The project manager bought us a box of chocolates when the first application was moved. I'm hoping she'll stretch as far as a dinner now that the last one is done.

You bust your gut regularly for a box of chocolates (between you)?

Here's a similar accolade

Yes, but I think an accolade is in order. Still, if a point is all that you can score, perhaps a box of chocs may be all you can expect as recognition. Politicians please take note.

You can call me TC

We office workers probably don't appreciate the IT guys enough, really. Always complaining and asking why things that worked fine yesterday, suddenly stop working today.

Without the IT department, the whole company wouldn't work at all.

So here's a smiley - applause for IT departments everywhere. The ones that do the work, I mean, not the people at the top, who don't seem to have much idea how to use a computer.

Hi Gnoman

Now I understand.!

smiley - applause

Formidable!

Bien fait.!

Surely a fine Scottish drink made from the finest malt would have been more acceptable??

Or pehaps a lovely cold bottle of sparkling French smiley - bubbly such as VC?

Veuve Clicquot would certainly hit the spot nicely. There's still a little tidying up to do on the project, and we have to turn off all the old computers by the end of week. Then we'll really deserver the Champers.
