A Wonderful Concert
Gnomon - time to move on Started conversation Mar 1, 2010
I attended a wonderful concert on Saturday night. My daughter El was playing cello with the Dublin Youth Orchestra Symphony Orchestra in St Bartholomew's Church.
The program included:
- Stravinsky's Pulcinella Suite, which starts out like a piece of 18th Century chamber music and gets wilder and wilder. I think this piece would have suited somewhere with a slightly less echoey acoustic, as there was a lot of very fast rhythmic playing, but it was still great.
- Saint-Saens Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, which is an amazing show off piece for solo violin and orchestra. The soloist Siobhán ('Shiv-awn') is only 16 and she was absolutely superb!
- A wind quintet of younger players played a short piece by Haydn. The poor oboist had a problem with her reed in the second movement and panicked, but the music kept going and it recovered later. Well done all!
- The second half of the concert was Sibelius's huge 5th Symphony. This is a very difficult work and sounded great in the acoustic of the church.
El has done two years in the Symphony Orchestra now, so she will consider retiring from the orchestra - she's very busy with her college studies and all the other musical groups she's involved in. Also, it'll give another young player a chance to lead the cellos.
