Sorry, Gnomon, what were we talking about? Ah Dan Brown. Well we'd finished him really hadn't we?

I think so, unless anyone else wants to discuss him or his work.

No wish to discuss Dan Brown anymore, but having met Michael Baigent and cronies in the eighties I can assure you that their book was a load of piffle. They hired my ex to do some research for them (for the Holy Blood book)- when he (my ex) found that non of their theories had any basis in fact they threw a hissy fit and refused to pay his invoices. They said they would only pay for results - ie make something up and we will pay you

I suspected such. That's why that other book, The Masonic Myth, might be interesting. From the review, it purports to be more based on fact and is written by a mason.
>>In the introduction to The Mason Myth, Kinney (a Mason himself) wrote that he wanted his book to be an antidote to both the "imaginative speculations of 'alternative historians,'" and to those Masonic histories that "succumb to the tyranny of minutiae, where a never-ending stream of names, dates, jargon, and organizational details numb the brains of all but the most dedicated reader."<<

As far as I remember the logic of "Holy Blood and Holy Grail" was:
1. We've found some incredible documents which someone lodged in the French National Library.
2. Nobody would make up such a crazy story, so it must be true!

Yea, from what I remember of The Temple and the Lodge it went like this:
"So we were on vacation in Scotland and we heard about some mysterious graves in a church yard on an island in a loch. We found it and they had NO names or dates, just outlines of a swords and builders' squares. So, the Knights Templar MUST have escaped to Scotland after King Charles routed them from France."

I've not read any Dan Brown, but I've seen the film of Angels and Demons. It's fairly good of its kind, but I'm not very fond of its kind. A rather large suspension of disbelief is required.

The other thing that "Holy Blood and Holy Grail" was based on was:
"We've discovered a guy who doesn't actually claim he's a direct descendant of Jesus Christ, but it must be true because all these documents without any provenance say so. We'll ignore the fact that he's served time in prison as a con man."

I better not say anything at all - I am considering that I may be sued for libel for what I posted earlier - I even thought I should yikes myself. You had to be there - they were not nice people.

>>doesn't actually claim he's a direct descendant of Jesus Christ, but it must be true . . .
Straight from Life of Brian
Curiously (talking of cons) Jesus never called himself the only son of God. 'Son of Man' was his self-description.

What? Like Man-Plus? More human than human? Jesus is Rutger Hauer isn't he?!
Next time I watch Blade Runner I'm going to have a whole different interpretation.
