Gnomon - time to move on Started conversation Feb 2, 2009
Yesterday was St Brigid's Day, the traditional first day of Spring in Ireland. We had snow and hail this morning.
I notice that the weathermen in Ireland do not use the traditional seasons starting in Feb, May, Aug and Nov. They use much more reasonable ones, with Spring starting on 1 March and the others moved on accordingly. I believe that the UK uses the same seasons.
Nevertheless, it's lovely to see the first flowers coming out, as I did yesterday.

Happy St Brigid's Day!
I'd report on the flowers here, but they're currently under 8 inches of snow (and rising).

Our snow this morning probably amounted to about 1mm on average.

We're below the snow line here in Cork, so all is green and verdant as usual.
Interestingly, despite the sub zero temperatures here there was no frost build-up anywhere. The car windows were clear when I went out this morning. There must have been a complete absence of precipitation here last night.

It's been cold here, but sunny all last week. The snowdrops have been out for quite a while already.

I was always told that 'on the mainland', the traditional 1st day of spring was St David's Day.

The Americans go for the equinox. So summer starts on midsummer's day?

According to Kingsley Amis, summer begins on 1st May:
'Hooray, hooray for the first of May!
Open-air ****ing starts today.'

It's like a little St Bridget's day reunion again. Gnomon always reminds us of the first day of spring and we all go out looking for flowers and listening for birds.
