How absolutely wonderfuil
So thrilled for her.
She must be a very promising 'cellist to have a Master Class with Julian Lloyd Webber,
Well done all of you and I wish her ever so much success if she chooses it for her career. I am tingling all over with joy.
I hope I shall be able to attend your first concert when you are the soloist - like that wonderful Jacqueline du Pres/
Bien fait my cherie.

It's at times like this I like to remember the words of Ben, the ancient prisoner.
"You lucky, lucky b**tard"

A group called "Music Network" has the aim of promoting classical, jazz and traditional music. They organized Julian Lloyd Webber to give a concert in the National Concert Hall, and while he was here in Ireland, they planned for him to do the Masterclass in a my daughter's music school, which is the biggest music school in Ireland.
The masterclass was a small affair - all the cello students were invited, but other than them, there were only mammies and daddies in the audience, totalling about 30 people in all.
The music school picked four students with a range of abilities. El represented the least accomplished group. Each of them got to play a piece lasting 5 to 10 minutes, then they played it again with Lloyd Webber interrupting and making suggestions as to how they could approve it. Each student got about 30 minutes all together.
Then we were presented with two tickets to the concert this evening, so El and I went to see the man himself in concert, which was good.

Her teacher gave her a piece which was really much harder than she was used to (Elegy by Fauré), and she worked very hard on it, improving immensely due to the pressure. And JLW certainly taught her a few things.
She's not going to do any cello exams this year because she's studying for Leaving Cert, the big exam at the end of secondary school. So now that the masterclass is finished, the pressure is off and she can just practise stuff she likes. She's also not going to do any piano exams, since she got her Grade 8 in June.
The concert was good. We both enjoyed it.

He played three sonatas, by Debussy, Britten and Brahms, and two pieces by William Lloyd Webber, his father.

How absolutely totally wonderful.
You are modest my dear Gnoman - however that is better than having parents who push their children into performing. Much better for them to be sent to the best musical college and develop their talent and musicsal ambitions.
I would love to know what El thought of it. As she went with you to Julian L-Webbers concert - incidentally what did he play? - she must have obviously enjoyed the masterclass he gave her. *
Pablo Casals - Rostropovich - I have attended a wonderful concert of his at the Barbican Casals of course is just a name but I never think of the Pyrenees without thinking of him. !I believe that his home was there in "them there mountains"!!
Oh you must both be so proud of El well done.

Terrific for your daughter, Gnomon. A justifiably proud moment for you.

Sorry, Christiane, I never answered your question. El found it a bit daunting to be playing with JLW listening critically, but it didn't worry her too much. Once she's performing, it tends to be just her and the music. She felt his advice was very good and that she learned a few things from him.

Thank you so much Gnoman. El must be very good to be able to perform under those conditions.
