Gnomon - time to move on

I read about it in an article by Patrick Moore about Alcyone which I don't have to hand at the moment. I'll look it up when I get home.

In Florida we were at 29.5 degrees north, which meant I could see some of the sky that isn't visible from home. I didn't do much stargazing, but I did manage to see Canopus (Alpha Carinae) - the second brightest star in the night sky. This is never visible from Ireland. It wasn't particularly bright in Florida, being down near the horizon, but it was shining in a part of the sky where nothing else was shining.

Cor. When my daughter returned from her New York trip she had nothing to report because "it was too bright" and they never saw any stars.

I looked at Venus last night just after sunset with my telescope. It's a beautiful narrow crescent, the perfect view.smiley - crescentmoon This is the best time to see Venus - there won't be another time as good for three more years.

Cor! It's been so bright lately that you wouldn't think it was a crescent.

Phil

Have you managed to see comet lulin yet? Me and MC managed it last night for the first time - hopefully conditions will be suitable in the next few days (ha!) to get the telescope out onto it.
