Gnomon - time to move on

Last night's performance of Messiah in St Patrick's Cathedral went well. There were a few dodgy bits, but I doubt the audience noticed.

We've a new conductor and it was the first time she had conducted us in performance. She took some numbers faster, and some slower, than we were accustomed to. We've been singing Messiah for nearly 20 years with very few changes, so it was interesting to get someone else's take on it. We also dropped one chorus (Let Us Break Their Bonds) and added two new ones (The Lord Gave The Word, Thanks Be To God).

We're doing it all again tonight.

Good for you, G.

I love The Messiah, but am an embarassment in the audience, because I can't help but sing along smiley - biggrin At least I'm in tune. My Dad was even less inhibited than me and tone deaf smiley - yikessmiley - laugh

Enjoy yourselves again tonight

hi Gnomon, congratulations

I want to ask you a favour. I´ve been googling but not fruits.

Do you know the title in English of this song*?
One of my groups sing well, and it would be a good idea to use that song for the Christmas show at my school.

* Aleluya, aleluya
Dominus vobis cum
dominus, dominus qui fecit coelum, qui fecit coelum,... et terra...

Well, more or less.
Thanks Gnomon,
you all will have a good time again singingsmiley - envy

I haven't heard that song before. The Latin translates to:

Alleluia, alleluia
The Lord be with you
The Lord who made the Heavens and the Earth...

thanks, Gnomon.

The son starts Joy to the Lord, I think, I can get also, Joy to the earth... the recording isn´t very good. And Im afraid, my English neither.

Thanks anyway.

You can call me TC

That'll be Joy to the World, Maria.

Hello everyone.

While we're on the subject - do you take scores along to concerts to follow the work, or do you prefer to just sit back and listen? Do you think it's rude of people to have a score on their lap during a concert?

Sometimes I wish I had mine with me (if I possess a score of the work being performed), but I don't know if it's good etiquette. As a practised singer, I would turn the pages very quietly of course.

Not that all singers can sit down, stand up and turn pages without making any noise. Conductors ought to spend more time practising those simple things, as it can spoil the enjoyment of a concert, and cause distraction. I don't know why it doesn't bother conductors more - they're much nearer the performers than the audience are.

We're always pulled up on noisy page turns and noisy standing and sitting during rehearsals!

I don't normally bring my score to performances when I'm in the audience - music is meant to be listened to, and I'm not a good enough sight reader to get much from the score.

It sort of makes you look like a critic . . . why would anyone bring a script to a play? Yet it does help listening, if the score says anything to you. The more ways we approach a thing, the better fix we get on it.

Zarquon's Singing Fish!

When I was at the Coloseum (sp?) in Rome ages ago, lots of the audience had scores. I'd never seen it before. I was at a recital a week ago and the programme had the words of some of the songs in both German and English, which I thought was a nice touch. I imagine you pays your money and you takes your choice.

It's absolutely ages since I sang in the Messiah!
