American Pain Addict

I and many of my close friends think that this is a SERIOUS problem - due to the fact that we are SI'ers and know what is going on... Right now I have just general information posted, but there is always more. This is a touchy subject, but I feel that it is a topic that could seriously help othes.
Thank you - Ellie

You forgot your link - http://www.h2g2.com/A431957

Touchy subject, yes. I made my arm bleed by scratching it repetitively a couple of times, just to see what it was like. I see how it could become addictive, it gives a feeling of acheivement. I guess people with low self-esteem need this feeling. Not that I have low self-esteem.

I was, and still am, unsure how it could result in permanent damage - could you expand on that please?

Where are your statistics based? As h2g2 is based in England, you should mention if those are American, or worldwide, etc. And also that the Bill of Rights is American........ smiley - winkeye

Apart from those bits - it's a very good entry, with lots of detail. smiley - smiley

Permanent damage would be scarring from injuries, and the risk that it could go further - to suicide or suchlike... There's also the risk of accidental death, or poisoning and suchlike, during periods of self-injury.

Bill of Rights could be replaced by 'Guidelines for those who wish to help' - that means friends, family, etc. Same message - but legal-speak turns many people off, me included...

Great Entry - if this helps a few more people to recognise they have a problem - brilliant.

I never read the bill of rights bit either, just skimmed through. Legal speak never goes down well with me but I didn't say anything because I thought it was just me..

There was good stuff, though - like recognising that self-injury can do good - though there are better ways...
And not being frightened of people who have or have had that problem, for that matter.

I'd never heard anything on the subject apart from in conversations with friends. This entry told me things and I have decided that I will *most definitely never do it again*, instead of just *will not do it again*.

I reckon this Entry is very good, just what the Guide needs, and since 61199 (at time of publication smiley - winkeye) people have registered there are bound to be more people who need to realise that self-harm is bad..

Should you mention masochism though? Some people (yes yes okay okay I admit it) find pain (must not quote Spike and say inspirational..) inspir.. pleasurable.

Hmm - where does the line get drawn between auto-masochism (that'd be doin it to yourself, rather than having some sadist do it) and SI?masochism is for sexual pleasure, whereas SI is not? or something else?

Masochism is for sexual pleasure? That isn't what I heard. In that case I am not smiley - winkeye

I thought masochism was just enjoying the pain. As far as everyone has told me, it is.

SI is more of harming oneself because one is depressed, down, has low self-esteem, etc. Doesn't mean one has to enjoy the pain.
