At the F1 race track, D.C. was testing the latest car. During the eight test laps, he managed to average the first two laps at 100mph, the next two laps at 102mph, the next two laps at 140mph and the last two laps at 150mph. What was his average speed for the entire 8 laps?

Huh, and you don't know how close it was that I didn't get to post the answer - my Netscape Nav. crashed just when I was about to post - had to open IE in a hurry and log in again!

Grrrr... I misread that 102 as 120! So I worked it out wrong. The correct answer is ... still up for grabs!

I had to take time to do a more complicated calculation, which should have given me the right answer (which yours didn't ). But I misread it.

By the way, Titania, that's a handy tunnel you found there. I thought I had lost you somewhere in the Kharga Oasis.

gnomon agrees with my maths .... yippeeeee
But are we just postponing the inevitable... can anyone catch Gnomon... (or can anyone hack into his computer so he can't answer anymore questions for a few weeks)

Hmmmm.... how about if we post at several of his conversations, making the quiz conversation slip down the page real fast?
...or maybe he keeps an eye on the conversation list of this entry - so we would probably have to start a lot of new conversations over here as well...
...but then when would we find the time to post the answer ourselves?
Maybe we could hire some thugs to do it?

You could all review my article about the Passage Tombs of Bru na Boinne, (in Peer Review at the moment) and make lots of suggestions. Then I would be occupied making changes to the article and wouldn't notice Greebo posting the question.

I'm sure titania's right, and the answer's 123, so why is whisky being congratulated?

It's something to do with the old brainstormer...
If a man has one hour to get to work 60 miles away, and he covers the first half of the distance at 30 mph - how fast does he have to go to get to work on time?

Gnomon - time to move on Posted Oct 12, 2001
Assume the track is 17,850 miles long, for ease of calculation. Two laps is 35,700 miles.
1st 2 laps @ 100 mph takes 357 hours
2nd 2 laps @ 102 mph takes 350 hours
3rd 2 laps @ 140 mph takes 255 hours
4th 2 laps @ 150 mph takes 238 hours
Total distance = 142800 miles
Total time = 1200 hours
Average speed = ?
