Almighty Rob - mourning the old h2g2

I've seen all these fluorescent boomerangs with a multitude of different prongs, and wondered if anyone could tell me the optimum number of blades on a boomerang.

Also, the World Boomerang Championships have never been won by an Australian Aborigine, despite their being the most famous boomerang users.

Hello!

I am a flying toy afficianato(enthusiast?smiley - smiley) and have enjoyed many boomerangs. Lately my favorite has been the Aerobie Orbiter, just because it is rugged enough to be brought back by my dog if it doesn't make it back on its own. But I have had quite a few 'regular' ones, the latest being the 'Phoenix', by Colorado 'rangsmith Jim Mayfield. I love it!! It has a nice flight(40 yards!!smiley - smiley), and is very dependable. The next one I get will be the 'Delicate Arch', which has a 60 yard range!!! I get them through 'Into the Wind', where I get my kites also. There's a link on my page. I tried searching through many web pages, but most makers don't sell online and I don't even bother mail ordering anything anymore! Hope to talk about 'rangs more with you folks. Cheers!!smiley - smiley

What about the traditional, wooden carved boomerangs, with burnt decorations on them? Do they stand up to the rigours of the modern "boomerangist"?

Also, is there a better word for "boomerangist"?

I've found that the traditional 'rangs work well, but don't have the range and aren't so forgiving as modern ones. Also, modern 'rangs usually have a nice hover at the end of the return, making them easier to catch. But then again, I haven't had much experience with traditional ones, so I could be wrong. Maybe they can be tuned to fly as well as any modern ones. Only one way to find out! smiley - smiley

How on EARTH did anyone develop a boomerang?

No-one sat down and said in 7,000 years time there will be a guy called Newton and another guy called Bernoulli, and according to them this if we carve a shape carefully like this it will fly, and come back.

Looks like proof of time travel to me; like mayonnaise.

I hope he speaks Aborigine!! smiley - winkeye Actually, there's got to be some info out there, I'm just to busy/lazy to look! I flew kites and 'rangs before work today, it was beautiful outside!smiley - smiley

The Researcher formally known as Dr St Justin

Erm... I suppose the aborigines just got tired of having to walk every time their hunting stick missed the target. I guess the age-old process of trial and error came into play.

And no, I don't speak aborigine. smiley - smiley
