Sorry, but I thought it lacked something too!
Any thoughts on the origins of handshaking??
Could it be a way of showing the other person you had no weapon in your hand, therefore no evil intent towards him??

Actually Gandalf you're absolutely right (if I remember correctly). It began as a sign in the early middle ages that the hand was free of a weapon and a simple salute of respect, by being held up as if to wave hi, but without actually moving it. The reason it was the right hand was obviously because of the vast majority of people are right-handed. It then evolved to the clasping of each others forearm, assumably to verify there was no dagger hidden up the others sleeve.
