I also believe this to be the case and also feel that Hamsters are not credited with the intelligence that they actually posses. My hamster is so clever that whatever he does is designed to inconveniance us . Sometimes its amusing but most of the time its damn right annoying. He has a rollerball which is supposed to give his exercise some variety but he mostly uses it as a toilet. He only gets up when the lights are off and as soon as they are switched on he climbs back up to his bed. Once out of his house though he is friendly and never bites although his tendancy to leap of sofas and chairs as soon as your back is turned is very annoying.
I believe all hamsters are instructed to behave like this as part of their mission to revenge the mice (through us humans who, of course, the mice control). Having said this I think they pity us for the way the mice have used us and this is why they do provide us with some entertainment and affection.
